A bifurcated column Everything ingenious is very simple , but often simplicity determines geniality. But the “bifurcated column” is not like this, as this figure is built on contradiction, and at that it is completely impossible! Visual information is understandable to everybody. It is not limited by boundaries of using language, vocabulary or grammar, and could be perceived by people with any level of education. Visual images can often represent facts and ideas more completely and distinctly, than any other means of communication. They can enrich ideas, expressed in words, by such range of feelings, that you will need no comments! Nevertheless (and we must at once deny everything said earlier) impossible objects do directly contradictory things: they dirty and confuse visual communication. If we tried to describe an impossible object with the help of words, for example, by telephone, then, probably, a man at the other side would not be able to draw it. You might ask a question: what practical application might this up-to-date gadget have? However, a “bifurcated column” could be used in practice. This figure might serve as a mine support. If a mine is being ruined, a bifurcated column might at once turn to two columns, supporting the ceiling and preventing the collapse! |
