Eschers relativity. 1953. A 28x29 cm lithograph. Three gravities are directed perpendicularly to each other. Three ground surfaces cut each other at right angles, and each one is inhabited with human beings. Inhabitants of two different worlds cannot walk, sit or stand on one and the same floor, as they have different ideas of a horizontal line and a vertical line. However, they can make use of one and the same stairs. E can see how two persons upstairs go side by side as if in one direction, - nevertheless, one of them is moving upstairs, and the other is moving downstairs. Contact between them is impossible, as they live in different worlds and do not suspect of each others existence. |
